Concrete retaining walls in North Port FL - soil held in place, water drained away
Soil washing down a slope, or an old wall starting to lean? We build concrete walls with the fill and drainage worked out first.

Liberty North Port Concrete is a concrete contractor based in North Port, Florida. We're best known for driveways, patios and other flatwork that stays level and drains well, and we build concrete retaining walls for homeowners and property owners in North Port and the cities around it, from Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte up through Venice and Sarasota.
- Site walked before every estimate
- Fill and drainage planned first
- Yard cleaned up when we leave
Concrete retaining walls, poured or stacked block
A concrete retaining wall holds back soil where your yard changes level. It's either poured in place or built from factory-made concrete units stacked dry, without mortar, that hold the ground mostly by their own weight. Most calls start with a slope that keeps washing out, a level spot needed for a patio or concrete pool deck, or an old wall that's started to lean.
The price usually comes down to the wall's length and height, poured or stacked, how easy the spot is to reach and what the ground is like. The schedule turns on permits, the soil and the weather. I'll give you your own figure in a written estimate once I've walked the site.
- Layout and digging. We mark the wall's line and dig past loose dirt down to the subgrade, the firm ground the wall will sit on.
- Base or footing. A packed gravel base under block, or a poured footing under a poured wall, keeps the wall from settling or tipping.
- Building the wall. For a poured wall we set forms and rebar, the steel that holds it together, and for block we set each row level.
- Grading and clean-up. We grade the soil back to the wall, haul off what we dug out and leave the area ready for planting.
Retaining wall work we take on
Retaining wall jobs run from a short wall that levels a garden bed to a longer run along a property line, and we build both poured walls and stacked block walls.
Poured concrete walls
Formed and poured in place with steel inside, a good fit for a straight run where you want one solid, clean face.
Segmental block walls
Concrete units stacked dry without mortar. An industry design manual notes that water drains out through the face, which helps keep pressure from building behind the wall.
Replacing a leaning wall
We take out a wall that's tipping or cracking and find out why it failed, usually the fill or the drainage, before the new one goes up.
Walls for patios and decks
A wall that levels part of the yard for a patio, steps or a pool deck, built so the grade and the drainage work together.
If your wall is part of a bigger project, like a new room that needs concrete floor installation, ask us about that piece too.
Why a concrete retaining wall needs good fill
A retaining wall built right keeps your slope where it is and sends water away from your house and the yard next door. Most of what decides that is buried once we're done, so that's where we put the care.
- Fill that drainsFine, silty fill with poor drainage can make a wall lean, shift or collapse, so we place fill that lets water through.
- A way out for waterDrain rock and an outlet behind the wall let rainwater leave instead of pressing against the back of it.
- Cracks where we chooseOn a poured wall we cut control joints, planned weak lines, so small cracks land there instead of across the face.
- Base before looksIf the budget gets tight, I'd simplify the face before the base and fill, because nobody sees those but they hold the wall up.

Why North Port owners call us for walls

I write your estimate myself, and our own crew does the forming, pouring and finishing with me on site, so nothing's lost in a handoff.

Retaining walls in North Port and nearby cities
North Port exempts single-family work under $7,500 from permits, except structural work, and its list doesn't name retaining walls, so we don't assume your wall is exempt. A lot partly or fully in a flood hazard area needs a permit for any work. We check with the city first, and its Development Services Department takes questions at bldginfo@northportfl.gov.
Flooding here comes mostly from heavy summer storms and tropical systems, and the city asks owners to check before changing the grade or placing fill so neighbors aren't harmed. We plan where the water behind your wall goes before we build, here and in Port Charlotte and Venice.
Tell us about your wall
Send the wall's rough length and height, slope photos and whether you're in a flood zone. We reply within one business day to set a free on-site estimate, no obligation.

What does a concrete retaining wall cost near North Port?
A poured concrete retaining wall about 3 feet high usually costs about $37 to $40 per square foot in Sarasota, labor and materials included. That figure leaves out removing an old wall, terraces, stamped or stained faces, extra height, curves and landscaping, so I price those in your written estimate after seeing the site.
Is a poured wall or a block wall better for a tight or curved yard?
For a narrow side yard or a curved layout, segmental block usually fits better, because an industry design manual notes the small, light units can go in hard-to-reach spots and shape tight curves and corners. A poured wall suits a straight run where you want one solid face, and I'll tell you which I'd pick once I've seen the spot.
When does a retaining wall in North Port need an engineer?
One industry guide says walls on soft or organic soil, peat, high-plasticity clay or silt, or fill soil need professional engineering help. On soft or uncertain ground, we'll recommend an engineer before any building starts, because the ground under the wall decides what it can safely hold.
Does my retaining wall in North Port need a city permit?
It may, because the city's small-job exemption described above leaves out structural work and doesn't say where retaining walls fall. When a permit's needed, we pull it in our name and set up the inspections, and if your work may qualify for an exemption, we help you put the request together.
